If you would like to speak with a therapist about your concerns, you can book a free consultation. A free consultation consists of a 15-20 minute phone call where you can talk with one of our therapists about your concerns without committing to a full evaluation. The therapist will ask questions about your child’s development, address any concerns you may have, and provide recommendations for your child. We also offer our FREE online tool, the Growth Ability Patterns (GAP) Assessment. In just a few minutes, you can learn whether your child is developmentally on track.
Speech Therapy Frequently Asked Questions
What areas do speech therapists treat in children?
Speech therapists, or speech-language pathologists (SLPs), work with children in four main areas: articulation (speech sounds, intelligibility), language (receptive and expressive), pragmatics (social language skills), stuttering/fluency, and feeding (oral motor, swallowing, some sensory).
What is language therapy?
Language therapy is part of speech therapy. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) assess and work on receptive language (what a child understands) and expressive language (how a child communicates his or her wants, needs, and desires).
How much of my child's speech should I (and others) be able to understand at this age?
Typically, a child should be 100% intelligible to unfamiliar listeners by age 4. For younger children, unfamiliar listeners should be able to understand roughly 25% age 1, 50% by age 2, and 75% by age 3.
My child needs feeding therapy. Should I book an appointment for speech therapy or occupational therapy?
Speech therapists (SLPs) know the ins and outs of the oral motor structures and focus on the “act” of eating. If your child is having difficulty chewing/manipulating foods, keeping food in their mouth, taking a long time to chew/swallow, and/or are coughing a lot during meals, an SLP will do your evaluation. Occupational therapists (OTs) know all things sensory. If your child is showing difficulties with specific textures, flavors, colors of foods, temperatures, etc., an OT will do your evaluation. In many cases, children with feeding issues have both oral motor and sensory difficulties. Let us talk through things with you on a free phone consultation to help determine which type of therapy is best for your child.

Kid’s Creek will call your insurance company and check coverage before you schedule your first session or evaluation so you can make an informed decision about any out-of-pocket expenses.
Do you offer services other than speech therapy?
Yes. Kid’s Creek Therapy is a full-service pediatric rehabilitation clinic, offering speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy services for children. We encourage you to explore our Services page for information about each of these therapy options and to learn more about the variety of specialized services we offer.
What should I expect when my child has an evaluation?
An evaluation allows a speech therapist the opportunity to assess your child’s development. This assessment may include a standardized test, observation through play, medical history information, and/or parent report. In most cases, it includes all four. Through the evaluation, it will be determined if treatment is necessary. Treatment at Kid’s Creek Therapy cannot be initiated unless an evaluation has been completed.
How can I pay for services?
Kid’s Creek Therapy accepts all major credit cards, checks, cash, PayPal, or CareCredit.
What are your hours of operation?
Kid’s Creek Therapy is available Monday – Friday from 9:00AM – 6:00PM and on Saturday by special request appointment.
Do you offer screenings?
Kid’s Creek Therapy is available to provide screenings to children at daycare centers, private schools, religious preschool programs or our office. Screenings are abbreviated evaluations to determine if a child could benefit from further evaluation or if a child’s level of performance is age appropriate and no further evaluation is needed. If your child is found to have mild difficulties yet a full evaluation is not recommended, home programming ideas will be discussed so parents can facilitate these skills at home. If an area of concern is identified, a full evaluation will be recommended.
Is there any paperwork I need to fill out prior to an evaluation?
Yes. Once an evaluation has been scheduled, our office will provide you with a link to a series of documents that Kid’s Creek Therapy needs to be completed prior to your child’s evaluation. It includes a case history form that gives us the background information pertinent to your child’s development. We request that all paperwork be completed in full and returned to us five days prior to your first appointment. If there is a delay in filling out the paperwork, your appointment may have to be rescheduled to a more convenient time.
What ages of patients do you see?
We provide pediatric services for children from birth to 21 and adult services specifically for orofacial myofunctional disorders.
Do you work with children with autism?
Yes. Kid’s Creek Therapy believes that a collaborative and multidisciplinary effort between the child, his/her family and his/her other support networks help to achieve results and reach the highest level of success. Not all therapy centers provide the same level of treatment experience for children with autism. We have committed to providing our staff with extended continuing education and ongoing training opportunities related to autism treatment. Treatment of children with autism and working closely with their families is one of our specialties.
Do you involve parents in the treatment process?
Yes. Parents are a very important part of treatment at Kid’s Creek. Parents are often invited into the treatment rooms to observe therapy if the situation is appropriate, and parent education is an integral part of every therapy session. Each session is designed to allow time for the parent and therapist to discuss progress and what was done during the therapy session. Home programs are provided to the parent to increase carryover in all settings and help the child be more successful in reaching their goals.
